From Prison Reform to Possibilities: A Conversation with Dr. Kim Nugent
Inside a quiet neighborhood shaded with trees, Dr. Kim Nugent is doing extraordinary work. Transforming the correctional system one mentorship program at a time. With a legacy rooted in compassion, second chances, and deep faith, her work inside maximum-security prisons stretches across states and hearts. We caught up with her to talk about inspiration, sacred spaces, and why she said she’d never write a book (until she became a 9-time bestselling author).
Purpose & Possibilities
KUWTC: For those just getting to know you what do you do, and why does it matter to you?
Kim: My name is Dr. Kim Nugent, and I work in maximum security prisons and state jails to bring about prison reform through peer-led mentorship programs in Mississippi, Florida, and Texas currently.
“My work is always about second chances.”
KUWTC: You’ve had such a dynamic career what sparked the shift toward authorship and advocacy?
Kim: The minister at my church wrote a book and brought the man who taught him how to church to share the journey. I attended a workshop after church and then signed up for the retreat. I am now a 9-time best-selling author. I had said I would never write a book—and look at me now!
“I had said I would never write a book—and look at me now!”
Where Your Story Begins
KUWTC: How did your upbringing influence the work you do today?
Kim: I grew up in a family of six kids. My parents taught us always to be compassionate towards others and to believe in second chances. That value system has followed me through every field—hospitality, higher education, healthcare, and now the corrections industry. My dad became a criminal attorney at 40 and worked until he was 70. He truly believed each client was innocent until proven guilty. We were also taught tolerance for all, no matter age, background, race, or religion.
Sanctuaries & Sacred Spaces
KUWTC: What does “home” mean to you?
Kim: A place that is my sanctuary inside and out, with the people I love and my dog Derby.
KUWTC: Describe your dream workspace what would make it feel just right?
Kim: Lots of books, a large workstation to lay out materials, and art that inspires me. Simple and colorful. A window to look out and see the world. One brick wall to the right and double doors to enter. Computer, printer, good lighting, a plant, and a great chair with my dog sitting next to me.
“I love my office. It is exactly as I described.”
KUWTC: How has your neighborhood or environment shaped your routine?
Kim: Because I own my own business, I can work from home. I live in a neighborhood with beautiful trees and sidewalks for walking. It has a calming effect.
Perspective Shifts
KUWTC: Have you ever had a moment where a space or experience changed how you saw your purpose?
Kim: A phone call shifted my perspective. I was known as a mentorship expert. One day I received a call from a man in Arizona who had been volunteering, sharing meditation. He asked me if I’d consider writing a book for mentorship in prisons. I said yes. It was amazing and scary, and then I spent the next five years doing research before I felt qualified to publish this book. Now I have three books that pertain to the corrections industry.
“It was amazing and scary… Now I have three books that pertain to the corrections industry.”
KUWTC: What advice would you give someone looking for a space that supports their next chapter?
Kim: Spend the money. Find the space that makes you feel great. You will know it when you walk in—or create it. You deserve it! It will pay off when you have a space; it invites creativity.
Faith, Focus & Flow
KUWTC: What role does faith or legacy play in your life and your decisions about where to live and work?
Kim: My belief in God is first in all things. My book From Prison to Possibilities has a strong spiritual foundation. I do not believe that a fundamental change can happen without a belief in God or a spiritual transformation.
Legacy
KUWTC: When people look back at your story, what do you want them to remember?
Kim: I made a difference in the lives of others.
KUWTC: Favorite city to call home?
Kim: Houston, Texas—surprised? There is so much to do from the arts, restaurants, sports, museums, green space, schools, things to do and so much more. My family is here.
KUWTC: If you could host a dream dinner party, who’s on the guest list and where would it be?
Kim: I would love to have dinner with Oprah Winfrey. I continue to be inspired by the difference that she makes in others.
